Since Tom Gildred launched Emerald Textiles in 2010, it has provided environmentally responsible, high quality linen rental, laundering, and management to large healthcare networks. The company has received significant attention for its energy-efficient model, state-of-the-art facilities, customer service and focus on cleanliness.
Energy-Efficient, Green Facilities
The Emerald Textiles headquarters is housed in an 111,000 square-foot industrial laundry facility in San Diego. The plant was designed to be as automated, energy efficient and green as possible. Tom and the team made sure the facility was constructed and equipped with industry leading operating systems to reduce water and power consumption, sewer disposal and linen wear.
As the business grew, Emerald Textiles added a second location in Riverside serving hospitals throughout Southern California and across the eastern corridor to Palm Desert.
Thanks to cutting-edge technology and advanced equipment, Emerald Textiles conserves approximately 120,000,000 gallons of water and over 750,000 therms of natural gas annually. According to Gildred, by partnering with its customers and through its unique Linen Management Program, Emerald Textiles saves some of its large health networks more than $1 million a year each, every year.

Clean Matters in the healthcare industry, and Emerald was built to exceed standards. The linen providers’ role in preventing HAIs (Hospital Acquired Infection) is paramount and the reputation for superior cleanliness was a driver for Emerald’s growth and a key component of customer satisfaction.
High Quality Customer Service
Emerald owns and rents linens to their clients, managing the daily collection, laundry processing, ongoing replacement of unusable items and linen deliveries to hospitals. At the time of its sale, Emerald delivered over 1 million pounds of laundry per week, processing over 50 million pounds annually, serving more than 70 percent of the hospital beds in San Diego.

Savings by Design
Emerald Textiles received the Savings by Design award, from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and San Diego Gas & Electric for energy conservation and savings. The technology, equipment and utilities were all designed and implemented in an environmentally responsible way.
Showcase Award: Energy Champion
San Diego Gas & Electric awarded Emerald Textiles the Energy Champion award at the annual SDG&E Energy Showcase in recognition of the company’s advanced design and energy efficiency. Energy Champions save more than 55 million kilowatt hours annually combined, an environmental and energy impact equivalent to removing more than 3,000 cars from the road.
